                        APPOINTMENT OF MARK SELWAY AS

                               CHIEF EXECUTIVE

The Weir Group PLC announces the appointment of Mr Mark Selway as Chief
Executive. He will take up his appointment on 5th June 2001.

Mark Selway has spent his career in the engineering industry, mainly with
Britax PLC, and he has managed businesses in the UK, USA, Europe, the Far East
and Australia.

He became a main Board Director of Britax in 1996 when he was appointed
Managing Director of the Automotive Components Division. Following the
purchase of that division by Schefenacker International AG in 2000, he became
a main Board Director of that company and Executive Director of Schefenacker
Vision Systems.

Commenting on the appointment, Sir Ron Garrick, Chairman of The Weir Group
said:

'Mark Selway's experience of running international engineering businesses is
ideally suited to The Weir Group, which has successfully developed a global
network of facilities, supplying technically enhanced products and services to
a wide customer base. I look forward to working with him to accelerate the
process of building shareholder value at Weir.'

Mark Selway, 42, was born in Australia and educated at the Southern Australia
Institute of Technology. He has been in the engineering industry for all of
his career in the fiercely competitive automotive components sector.

He began his career in an Australian engineering company which was acquired by
Britax PLC and shortly thereafter, at the age of 28, he was appointed
Marketing Director.

Two years later he was asked to manage a greenfield site development in the
USA to supply components to the automotive market. He was President of the US
operation in Michigan. It subsequently became the market leader in the North
American market.

During his time as Managing Director of the Britax Automotive Components
Division, the business grew under his leadership. He supported and led the
sale of the division to create a global leader in vision systems with turnover
of $800 million, 6100 staff and 15 factories across the world.
