Whitbread PLC - Transaction in own shares
Whitbread PLC announces that on 20 December 2005 it purchased 171,210 of its
ordinary shares at an average price of 941.4921 pence per ordinary share.

The purchased shares will all be held as treasury shares. Following the above
purchase, Whitbread PLC holds 846,210 ordinary shares as treasury shares. The
total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding shares held as treasury
shares) is 256,883,350.
