Wincanton secures Sainsbury's contract
Wincanton, a leading provider of supply chain solutions in the UK & Ireland, today announces it has secured a three year agreement with Sainsbury's, one of the UK's leading supermarket chains, to provide warehousing and distribution services in London.
The agreement will see Wincanton expand their operational footprint with Sainsbury's to now include the Thameside Distribution Centre (DC) in South East London. Wincanton currently manages Sainsbury's distribution centre in Greenford, West London and, with effect from the early part of 2013, will collectively manage the logistics operation for the majority of Sainsbury's Local stores across London.
The announcement builds on Wincanton's long-established relationship with Sainsbury's where they also operate the supermarket chain's DCs in Northampton and Sherburn, as well as being the sole provider of its port to DC container movements in the UK.
Key to Wincanton's success was its stated aim to focus on shared management of the Sainsbury's Local stores across London with a single transport fleet to gain maximum efficiency from its vehicle fleet and warehousing operations. As well as boosting efficiency, Wincanton's plan also demonstrated how the arrangement would minimise Sainsbury's impact on the environment and cut congestion in the capital through improved store delivery schedules.
Eric Born, Chief Executive Officer of Wincanton commented:
"We are delighted to be extending our long-term partnership with Sainsbury's and believe this agreement is testament to both the creativity and innovation that our service offering delivers for customers.
We have a strong pedigree of operating within the UK grocery retail environment and believe our extensive knowledge will continue to offer exciting opportunities for new and potential customers as we evolve our approach to supply chain management to meet the demands of today's challenging market environment."
Chris Marrow, Director of Logistics Operations at Sainsbury's also commented:
"Wincanton has a reputation for not only providing excellent customer service, but also for creating innovative and market-leading solutions that enhance and complement their customers' operations.
As expected, their strategy for our Thameside DC builds on our shared experiences at Greenford, but goes much further by seeking to maximise synergies through a collaborative and innovative transport approach and shared resources across the management and administrative teams."
