Notification of Major Interests in Shares

The Company received a notification on 18th May, 2004 from Hermes Administration
Services Limited, on behalf of BriTel Fund Trustees Limited and The Trustees of
BT Pension Scheme informing it that they have an interest in 2,135,764 shares,
representing 3.558% of the issued ordinary share capital of the Company. The
shares are registered in the name of BriTel Fund Nominees Ltd.
