Nyrstar restarts production activities at Balen

Balen, Belgium (17 September 2009) - Nyrstar NV today announced that
it will restart limited production activities at its Balen (Belgium)
smelter by the end of September.

Initial production activities will be limited to the restart of the
roasting facility which produces calcine for subsequent processing
into zinc metal. The calcine produced at Balen will be used to build
up stocks for zinc production at Balen and Nyrstar's other European

Whilst the actual date for recommencing zinc production still remains
subject to a number of considerations (including the successful
conclusion of negotiations for energy supply with the local
electricity supplier), Nyrstar currently expects zinc production to
recommence during Q4 2009.

Once zinc metal production at Balen is recommenced, Nyrstar intends
to produce at 70% of capacity. Further increases in production will
depend on market conditions.

Greg McMillan, chief operating officer of Nyrstar, said:

"We continue to make significant progress in transforming Balen into
a lean, efficient, dynamic and flexible business. Whilst we believe
that the outlook for zinc in the medium to long term is positive, in
the short term markets are likely to remain volatile.  In view of
this we are commencing a prudent ramp-up of activities at the Balen
smelter that should enable zinc production to commence later this

About the Balen smelter
Balen is a large-scale zinc smelter, located in the north-east of
Belgium with a capacity of (approximately) 275.000 tonnes of cathode
zinc. In 2007 and 2008, cathode zinc production at Balen was 254.000
tonnes and 251.000 tonnes (respectively).  In November 2008, Nyrstar
announced production cuts of 28% at Balen, before placing the smelter
on care and maintenance in December 2008.  As at 30 June 2009, the
Balen workforce consists out of 435 employees.
