Re Contract

14 December 2001

                                                       Paris, 14 December 2001

Thales Underwater Systems (TUS), and Whitehead Alenia Systemi Subacquei
(WASS), a Finmeccanica Company, have been awarded a contract for the sonar
systems for the new Franco-Italian Horizon Frigates.

The contract has been awarded by Thales Naval France to TUS and WASS as
co-contractors for the 4 Sonar Systems, designated 4110 CL (2 each for Italy
and France). This Medium Frequency Hull-mounted sonar, utilising a Cylindrical
Array and advanced processing, will provide a state-of -the art capability to
the new frigates. Further systems may be required for additional frigates.

TUS and WASS will share the work on the systems on an equal basis, with TUS
being the focal point for system integration in the French Frigates, and WASS
for the Italian frigates.

TUS and WASS are already accustomed to working in partnership on other
programmes, including the Franco-Italian SLAT (Torpedo Defence) programme; and
on the Lightweight Torpedo MU90.

The supply of this high-performance sonar is a leading example of European
co-operation. TUS and WASS will, through their growing relationship, deliver a
cost-effective capability, enhancing the opportunities for future
